I am an artist born in the United States and residing in Rovaniemi, Finland. For the past four years I have been working with paper cutting, a process in which line drawings are cut out from their backgrounds and combined in layers to be hung on the wall or in the air. This technique enables me to combine the spontaneous mark of my hand with the precision of the cutting and the delicate quality of line and paper. My works may be based on figurative subjects, but then they are reduced to an indistinct abstract state. They may also be completely non-objective, in which case the focus is on the expression of the drawing. Either way, questions about the nature of the material and the value of labor are often raised. Installed with ample space and without frames, my works interact with the space they occupy and offer a visual experience that defies gravity.
